Purple crochet amigurumi baby pegasus, laying on her back, feet in the air, laying on a pink blanket

Putting Together Your Newborn Pegasus Ami

The body of your baby pegasus is simple, but what makes her amazing is the shaping in her limbs and the textures on her wings.

What stitches are used in the newborn pegasus pattern?

The wings use picot stitches to create the texture of the feathers, and the nostrils are made from bobble stitches. But other than that, the pattern is done with mostly single crochets! In fact, you’ll find that all the cool bends, curls, and textures are done with simple variations on the simplest stitch in crochet.

The pattern will use branching to make those adorable bent legs and the detailed, tiered wings that add so much to this adorable baby horse.

Even if you have never done a complex amigurumi pattern, I want to walk you through it. The Premium Pattern 2.0 has pages upon pages of color photos to help you with any challenges you face. The pattern is tested and tech edited to ensure accuracy and clarity. And, on the off chance you get stuck, I’m here to help you!

Pattern Notes

  • Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
  • For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
  • On last rnd of each leg, use a traditional decrease when working in BLO. Do not use an invisible decrease here as it will pull the hoof closed too tightly and possibly cause it to pucker inward.
  • Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.

Special Stitches

  • Bobble-st โ€“ Bobble stitch: [Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 5 times in same st, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook.
  • Surface sc โ€“ Surface single crochet: With loop on hook, insert hook around post or between stitches of finished work, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through both loops on hook. Work single crochets on top of finished work.
  • Sc join โ€“ Single crochet join: With long starting tail, make slip knot in yarn, loop slip knot over hook, insert hook through stitch, yo, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Leave starting tail on outside of work.
  • Sc3tog โ€“ Single crochet 3 together โ€“ [Insert hook through next st, yo, pull up a loop] 3 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
  • Picot โ€“ Picot: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.

Assembly

Head

Head will attach to neck at a slight angle, so it bends slightly up when the baby is laying on her back. Center point of body will touch head at about Rnd 3 of head.

Once held in the desired position, use pins to mark where the head and neck meet. Pin slightly wider than you think necessary to prevent a floppy head. Using the sewing tail from the head, using the pins as a guide, sew the head to the neck.

Ears

Ears are attached to the head with the concave side facing forward. Mark 5 sts in a small circle between Rnds 24 and 25, 6 sts apart, even with the inside edge of the safety eyes. Sewing through both layers of the last round of the ears, using the pins as a guide, sew the ears to the head.

Eyelids

Sewing through the back of the starting ch, sew eyelids in an arch above the safety eyes.

Legs (Front and Hind)

Hold one Front Leg to side of body with elbow pointed up and hoof and shoulder pointed down. Hold so the leg tilts enough to see the bottoms of the hooves clearly, and the legs positioned vertically on the sides of the body, not tilted in toward the belly. Using pins, mark the shoulder where it touches the body. Place corresponding pins in the body touching the pins in the shoulder.

Place pins on the opposite side of the body, mirroring the placement of the first set of pins so that the Front Legs are placed evenly.

Hold Hind Leg to body with knee pointed down and hoof and thigh pointed up. (Hind legs bend the opposite way from Front Legs.) Position so the end point and sewing tail is 4 sts straight down from the end point of the shoulder. The Hind Legs should be in alignment with the Front Legs (not tilted toward the belly), the inside corner of the knee even with the bottom edge of the body, and the legs tilted so the bottom of the hooves are clearly visible. Using pins, mark the thigh where it touches the body. Place corresponding pins in the body touching the pins in the thigh.

Place pins on the opposite side of the body, mirroring the placement of the first set of pins so that the Hind Legs are placed evenly.

Using sewing tails from shoulders and thighs, using pins as a guide, sew the Front Legs and Hind Legs to the body, sewing only around the shoulder/thigh.

Mane

Starting in the middle of the forehead, mark with pins in every other stitch, in a straight line between the ears and down the neck. Thread one of the tails of each Short Curl around the post of the each marked stitch. Use the other tail to tie a knot attaching the curl to the head. Weave the ends into each curl, tying with a knot or two in the curl to secure the ends.

Tail

Repeat the Mane process for the tail, but mark a rectangle of stitches 3 sts wide by 2 sts tall between the back legs, on the rump of the Pegasus. Tail should point straight down from body, not out the back like a traditional tail.

Wing Attachment

The wings are sewn on in a large triangle-like shape.

On the back side of the body, use pins to mark a straight line. Starting between the shoulders, place a pin in the center of the back, then place 3 more pins in a straight line down the center, every 3 rounds. One at a time, hold the wings to the back of the body, aligning the center starting point of the wing with the first pin. Place pins in the wings corresponding to the pins on the back.

Place a pin 1 st behind the arm attachment, then lay the wing over it and add a corresponding pin to the wing.

Repeat for other wing.

Using a long strand of RAIN, starting at the center point of the wing, sew the edge of the wing along the pinned line.

Fold the wing over in a straight line from the lower outside pin to the pin at the center point of the wing. Sew the wing to the body in a straight line on the underside of the wing from pin to pin, working through only one layer of the wing.

Repeat with other wing.

Weave in all attachment ends when parts are positioned as desired.
