Amelia the Sloth | Free Crochet Pattern

Everyone loves a sloth. This free crochet pattern is for the fluffiest, cuddliest, amigurumi sloth you will ever hug. Amelia is an update of a pattern for a large Hoffmann’s Two-Toed Sloth.

While the three-toed sloth is much more famous, I fell in love with the two-toed sloth at my favorite zoo, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. They don’t have the characteristic mask of their cousin. Instead, their expression is more peaceful and their nose more like a boop-able pig snout.

So I wrote a pattern a few years ago using this construction method, but I didn’t like his face anymore. It was time for an upgrade.

Amelia is that pattern upgrade.

Contruction

The nostrils are worked directly onto the snout as bobble stitches with a color change that makes them pronounced and well…boop-able.

The whole body is one piece, with the legs worked directly onto “leg holes” left after make the torso. If you have never done an amigurumi with all four legs worked onto the body like this, I would recommend getting the Premium Pattern for the bonus photos and guides.

And the fur? It’s all loop stitches.

Yes, that can be intimidating, but once you get the hang of them, they have a great rhythm and are really fun. By cutting all the loops and brushing them out, you can create a super-fluffy, ultra-soft fur that is perfect for a sloth.

This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, often with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version.

Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Amelia the Sloth

Pattern is written in English, in US terms, using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

Advanced pattern.  Need to have knowledge of single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), slip stitch (sl st), right side (RS), wrong side (WS), increases and decreases, and amigurumi part attachment. Knowledge of loop stitch useful, but an eagerness to learn is a great substitute.

Supplies

Measurements

13” long x 10” tall, laying on his back

Gauge

8 sts x 8 rows in sc = 2” x 2”

Pattern Notes

  • Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
  • For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
  • Do NOT use invisible decreases for this pattern. Because all the decreases are worked with the wrong side (WS) facing out, invisible decreases will show a ridge on the outside of the piece.
  • Extra 5 sts in Rnd 13 of Body are not counted. This moves the starting stitch 5 sts to the left and does not change the stitch count of the round.
  • Weave in attachment end at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.

Special Stitches

  • Bobble-st – Bobble stitch: [Yo, insert hook into st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 5 times in same st, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook.
  • Loop-st – Loop Stitch: Insert hook through st, loop yarn back to front over 1 finger, slide hook over nearside of loop, grab farside of loop and pull through st, yo, pull through both loops on hook, remove finger from loop.
  • Loop-st dec – Loop Stitch Decrease: Insert hook through st, yo, pull through st, insert hook through next st, loop yarn back to front over 1 finger, slide hook over nearside of loop, grab farside of loop and pull through st, yo, pull through both loops on hook, remove finger from loop.
  • Loop-st inc – Loop Stitch Increase: Work two loop sts in next st.
  • Lg loop-st – Large Loop Stitch: Insert hook through st, loop yarn back to front over 2 fingers, slide hook over nearside of loop, grab farside of loop and pull through st, yo, pull through both loops on hook, remove fingers from loop.
  • Lg loop- st inc – Large Loop Stitch Increase: Work two large loop-sts into the next st.
  • Sc join – Single crochet join: Slip knot in yarn, loop slip knot over hook, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.

Cut a 12- to 18-inch piece of wire and bend it so it has two equal points in the middle the same length as the toes. Tightly twist each of the points. Trim the excess wire. Bend the tips under and clamp down so the sharp end is not exposed.

Insert the wire into the toes, all the way to the tips. Only a tiny bit of the wire should show out the bottom.

Sew the foot to the front leg, parallel to the body so the toes face inward. Bend wire in toes to position.

Hind Feet

(Make 2)

With TAU, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Sc 6 in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2-11: Sc evenly around. (6)

Rnd 12: Do not cut yarn. 3 sc on first loose toe, 6 sc on second loose toe, 3 sc on first loose toe, 6 sc on starting toe. (18)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing. Do not stuff.

Cut an 18- to 24- inch piece of wire and bend it so it has three equal points in the middle the same length as the toes. Tightly twist each of the points. Trim the excess wire. Bend the tips under and clamp down with plyers so the sharp end is not exposed.

Insert the wire into the toes, all the way to the tips. Only a tiny bit of the wire should show out the bottom.

Sew the foot to the front leg, parallel to the body so the toes face inward. Bend wire in toes to position.

Head Attachment

Hold the head to the body with the change from sc to loop-st in line with front legs. Turn her head slightly so she can still see when hanging in a tree. Mark where the head and body touch with pins and use the pins as a guide to sew the head to the body. Don’t be afraid to sew over some loop sts, you can pull them out later when you brush.

Fur

When completely assembled, snip the loops on all the loop stitches. Cut out any knots that won’t brush out.

Using hairbrush or slicker brush, brush yarn firmly in a downward direction to fluff and blend fur. Shedding of some excess fluff is normal. Do not over-brush.

    Hi Kati,

Thank you for this Pattern. I love it. I just finished my Amelia. It was a lot of work, all those loops, but the result is just great. Absolutely worth it.
