The owlcat crochet plushie pattern is a fun hybrid mythical creature. This pattern for Babineaux the Owlcat will have you saying “Cacaw! Rawr!” while you crochet his cute amigurumi face.

Unlike a gryphon, an owl cat has the face of an owl, feathers, and wings, but all four feet are paws and they don the classic cat ears.

This particular owlcat also has a more cat-like entitled attitude, and Babineaux (say “Bab-in-oh”) has all the swagger too.

Owl cat mystical creature free crochet pattern from Hooked by Kati

I had a blast designing this feathered feline.

The feathers, while complex in written form, are a great frilly addition to this guy. And I am totally in love with his big, clunky cat feet! In fact, I think it’s my new favorite way to make paws!

Oh, and I could go on and on about big, clunky paws!

With my World of Warcraft obsession, I have spent a lot of time running around as an owlcat druid, and I fell in love with the look of a cat with a big mane and a curvy owl beak. And did I mention I love big, clunky paws!?

So, I knew that I wanted to put a big mane and clunky feet on this guy, but I think he also captures the grace of a house cat and the wisdom of an owl.

Construction

This pattern is difficult. I’m not going to sugar coat that.

I asked the Plus members if they wanted feathers worked directly onto the head or if they would rather have simple feathers to sew on.

No one likes sewing, so the majority said they would rather the pattern be a little more complex but have less sewing.

I did my best to oblige.

The feathers are worked in one fluid set of rows, worked right in the a round of the head.

The Premium Pattern has a huge amount of row-by-row photos to help with the feathers, both on the head and on the wings and mane.

I also made the body and front legs all one pieces, starting with the neck and working down, branching into three below the shoulder.

This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!

Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Toes Attachments

Front Feet

Mark 2 stitch on either side of front leg in Rnd 45, directly across from one another, one on the inside of the leg and one on the outside.

Using tail from Toes, thread needle through one marked st and out other side through other marked st. Insert needle in center of other end of Toes and out through any st on Toes. Pull tight to close Toes around foot. Toes should face forward on body.

Optional: To anchor Toes in place, sew a few stitches between the bottom of the Toes and where they touch on the bottom of the foot. Be sure they are not so low they affect stability.

Repeat on other Front Leg.

Hind Feet

Mark 2 sts on either side of hind leg in Rnd 16, directly across from one another, one on the inside of the leg and one on the outside.

Using tail from Toes, thread needle through one marked st and out other side through other marked st. Insert needle in center of other end of Toes and out through any st on Toes. Pull tight to close Toes around end of foot. Toes should wrap around end of foot, facing forward, not facing up.

Optional: To anchor Toes in place, sew a few stitches between the bottom of the Toes and where they touch on the bottom of the foot. Be sure they are not so low they affect stability.

Repeat on other hind leg.

Hind Leg Attachment

Set body on table like a tripod. Body and both front legs should touch the table at the same time. Hold hind leg to body with center of last round touching the “armpit” where the body and legs meet, lower leg flat on the table with no gap between leg and thigh.

Mark with pins where thigh touches the body. Using the pins as a guide, sew hind leg to body around thigh.

Repeat on other side, making sure hind legs mirror each other and are even when viewed from the back.

Feather Mane Strips

(Make 4 total; 2 CHAR, 2 DUST)

Ch 38.

Base Row: Sc in second ch from hook, 36 sc, ch 1, turn. (37)

Begin Feathers Section. Feathers will be worked perpendicular to Base. Work into Base as instructed.

Row 1: Sl st in first st on Base, ch 6, turn. (6 chs)

Row 2: Sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc, hdc, dc, skip st on Base, sl st in next st on Base (counts as turning ch), turn. (5)

Row 3: 2 sc, ch 6, turn. (2 sts, 6 chs)

Row 4: Sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, skip st on Base, sl st in next st on Base, turn. (7)

Rows 5: 2 sc, ch 4, turn. (2 sts, 4 chs)

Row 6: Sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc, hdc, dc, sk st on Base, sl st in next st on Base, turn. (5)

Rows 7-42: Repeat Rows 3-6 eight times.

Rows 43-44: Repeat Rows 3 and 4. (18 feathers total)

End Feathers Section.

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.

Mane Attachment

Using pins, mark on the back of the neck at Rnds 13, 11, 9, and 7. Mark the same rnds on the front of the neck.

Tip: Use alternating pin colors to delineate which color Feather Mane Strip to attach.

Starting at Rnd 13, wrap the first DUST Feather Mane Strip around neck, ends meeting at the marked st on the back of neck. Thread tail through one st on neck, then sew ends of Feather Mane Strip together through last 3 sts of last feather and first 3 chs of first feather. Pull tight.

If Mane is not tight around neck, tack down at front marked st as well.

Repeat with first CHAR Feather Mane Strip at Rnd 11.

Repeat with second DUST Feather Mane Strip at Rnd 9.

Repeat with second CHAR Feather Mane Strip at Rnd 7.

Head Attachment

Centered on the bottom of head, pin a 7 x 8 rectangle. This will create a rectangle 30 sts around.

Hold head in the desired position on neck (turned slightly or straight ahead), and pin where marked sts touch Rnd 6 of neck.

Thread tail from back of head down to a marked st. Using pins as a guide, sew head to neck. Sew in straight lines between pins on the head and sew around Rnd 6 on the neck. This will create a strong, even attachment with no tilt.

Here is a tutorial for part attachment that might help.
