Free Wall Dragon Crochet Pattern – Bishop | Fantasy Decor
This free crochet pattern is for a large, realistic 3D dragon that hangs on a wall or door. It is posed to look like it is crawling out of the wall, roaring. This pattern is for advanced crocheters.
This is the free, text-only pattern for Bishop the Wall Dragon. The pattern contains all the steps, stitches, and assembly instructions you will need to create your very own dragon wall art, guaranteed to wow all of your friends.
So why make a wall dragon out of yarn? Because it’s super badass, that’s why!
Bishop is SOO much more than an amigurumi — he is an art installation for your home, and he’s one big dude! With two options wingspans of three feet (36 inches) or four feet (48 inches), he can be intimidating, both as a project and as a finished wall monster.
I won’t lie to you… this pattern is a BEAST. Yes, it creates a beast, but it is also a monster of instructions and time to create. It contains some very cool shaping techniques, including branching, short rounds, short rows, picots, and some very cool things I don’t have a name for that make that nifty one-piece head.
As a result, I wouldn’t recommend this pattern for beginners. It is definitely an advanced pattern, especially if you are going to make it using the text-only pattern without the Premium upgrade.
I held off posting the free version for a while because I wanted to be straight with you โ this pattern is complicated. Without the step-by-step photos in the Premium PDF, some sections are going to make you want to throw your hook across the room.
My suggestion? Read through the free version first. Get a feel for what you’re taking on. Then decide if you want the Premium PDF to hold your hand through the tricky parts. It’s not a sales pitch, it’s just the truth. Some patterns really are easier with pictures. This is one of them.
The Premium PDF has 45 pages of step-by-step photos, color coding, and line-by-line checkboxes. The free version has the pattern text. Both will get you a dragon on your wall. One of them will get you there with a lot less frustration.
Instructions include a choice of Wide Wings (48โ wingspan) or Narrow Wings (36โ wingspan to fit on a standard door), and either Back Spikes or Ridged Spines for back embellishments

How To Crochet Your Wall Dragon
- No-sew teeth! Starting with the mouth, the entire dragon is built in one piece except for the wings and embellishments (horns, eyelids, spines/spikes, claws).
- Uses a variety of short rounds to create the head, neck and body.
- The wings are done in short rows to create one-piece wings.
- The body has a flat back, reinforced with plastic canvas to make it hang easily on a wall or door.
- Aluminum pop can tabs are used to hang the wings and arms — the whole thing is surprisingly light!
- You can choose WIDE (48″ wings) or NARROW (36″ wings).
- You can choose Back Spikes or Ridged Spines as back embellishments.

Before You Start This Pattern
Frankly, no. This is a complex pattern that includes several techniques that are challenging for beginners. I would highly recommend this NOT be your first crochet project.
Worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn works best for most amigurumi patterns. Using a smaller hook than recommended will help create tight stitches with fewer gaps.
Use a hook smaller than the yarn label suggests and keep your stitches tight. This helps prevent stuffing from showing through the fabric.

Pattern Notes
- Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
- For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
- Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
- * When instructed, an additional sc(s) will be added at the end of a round to move the starting stitch of the next round to the left (clockwise). This does not change the stitch count of the round. It only moves the starting point.
- ** Rounds labeled โShort roundโ are worked back and forth and will end before the round is complete, leaving stitches deliberately unworked to be worked in later rounds as instructed.
Special Stitches
- Picot โ Picot: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.
- Sc join โ Single crochet join: With long starting tail, make slip knot in yarn, loop slip knot over hook, insert hook through stitch, yo, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Leave starting tail on outside of work.
- Sc3tog โ Single crochet 3 together โ [Insert hook through next st, yo, pull up a loop] 3 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
- Surface sc โ Surface single crochet: With loop on hook, insert hook around post or between stitches of finished work, pull up a loop, yo, pull through both loops on hook. Work single crochets on top of finished work.

Place two markers in Rnd 31, each one 2 sts to the outside of the increases. These will mark safety eye location for installation later.
Row 34: (Short Rnd) (WS) Do not chain, skip sl st, 24 sc, sl st in next st, turn. (24)
Rows 35-40: Repeat Rows 33 and 34 three more times.

Rnd 42: (RS) 3 sc on jaw, 12 sc on chin, 3 sc on jaw, 24 sc on snout. (42)
Rnd 43: (RS) Skip sl st from end of Rnd 41, 18 sc, [2 sc, dec] 6 times. (36)
Insert safety eyes 2 stitches to the outside of the increases in Row 31. Make sure eye slits are vertical when the head is held up, neck hole close to vertical, NOT while chin is flat on the table.
Begin stuffing both snout and chin. Pay extra attention stuffing in front of nostrils.
Rnd 44: (RS)Sc evenly around. 19 sc to move starting st to other side. (36)
Before beginning the neck, we will add some detail to the head. You can choose to break your yarn here or leave it intact until we continue. We will take up in this same place on the neck soon.
Tongue
Count 4 sts up from end of the centerline stitches on the bottom of the mouth. Place a pin horizontally along the Rnd 2 (2 rnds on either side of the centerline). Continue marking every few stitches until the last pin is placed 2 sts past the last tooth on either side.
Using a strand of RED, sew back and forth through the work, between where the pins enter and where they exit on either side of the centerline. This pinches the piece together so it puckers up into a tongue along the centerline.
Bind off and weave in ends.
Mouth Corners
(Make 2)
With RED, ch 2.
Row 1: 2 sc in second ch from hook, turn. (2)
Row 2: Ch 1, inc, sc, turn. (3)
Row 3: Ch 1, 3 sc, turn. (3)
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc, inc, turn. (4)
Row 5: Ch 1, 4 sc. (4)
Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Fold head Snout and Chin so that the top and bottom teeth touch. Mark the corner of the mouth with pins.
Count 5 sts on the top and bottom from the marked point at the corner of the mouth, mark along Rnd 7 (the first MUST round).
Hold Mouth Corners to the mouth so the last st (tip) touches the corner of the mouth. Using the pins as a guide, sew each triangle along the long edge to the sides of the mouth along Rnd 7 of the mouth. The last row of the mouth corners will be stretched between the upper and lower jaw. This will keep the jaw from flopping open.
Nostrils
Using pins, mark a crescent around the upper edge of the nostril, marking about 6-7 sts. Repeat on the other nostril.
Using the pins as a guide, using MUST, surface sc (see Special Stitches) in stitch on outside of nostril, surface sc around upper edge of nostril to the other side.
Repeat on other nostril.
Weave in ends.
Eyelids
(Make 2)
With MUST, ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, 5 sc, turn. (6)
Row 2: Do not chain, inc, 4 sc, inc, turn. (8)
Row 3: Do not chain, inc, 6 sc, inc, turn. (10)
Row 4: Do not chain, sc, ch 8, skip 8, sc. (2 sc, 1 ch-8 sp)
Bind of leaving tail for sewing.
The first 3 rows will be positioned above the eye and the chs below it, creating both and upper and lower eyelid.
Pin the eyelids either perpendicular to the vertical slit of the eye or angled slightly downward for a more sinister dragon (see below). Make sure the front and back of the eyelids are aligned on the same round of the head.
Using the sewing tail, sew into place, with lower lid as close to the safety eye as possible and upper lid placed as pinned.

Rnds 134-137: Sc evenly around.
Stuff firmly, leaving some space to move around in the body to sew the plastic canvas to the flattened back of the torso.
Rnd 138: [8 sc, dec] 8 times. (72)
Rnd 139: [7 sc, dec] 8 times. (64)
Rnd 140: [6 sc, dec] 8 times. (56)
Rnd 141: [5 sc, dec] 8 times. (48)
Rnd 142: [4 sc, dec] 8 times. (40)
Bind off leaving very long tail for sewing.
Cut 2 circles of plastic canvas 6 inches in diameter. Cut a hole in the center of ONE of the circles 2-3 inches in diameter.
(There is a diagram and printable template in the Premium PDF.)
Insert ring of plastic canvas (the one with the hole) into the back of the body. Press flat with edges touching Rnd 137, so that the last 5 rnds stretch over the face of the plastic canvas. This should hold the body open and give it a flat surface to press against a wall when hanging.
Note: The plastic ring does not need to be covered by the crochet. It is intended to remain exposed.
Using the sewing tail from the body, sew around the outside edge of the plastic canvas ring, attaching it to Rnd 137. Weave in ends.
Finish stuffing, paying close attention to stuffing behind the newly-added plastic ring. You will be able to reach the neck and shoulders more through the arm holes.
Insert the other plastic canvas circle into the hole in the ring and press it flat against the inside of the ring. This will allow the second piece to act as reinforcement and hold in the stuffing.
Upper Arms (Wings)
(Repeat on both exposed arm holes of the body)

Hold the last round of the wing to the marked sts on the Central Wing Bone, making sure the wing bones are facing forward and the pointed end is facing DOWN.
Using the MUST sewing tail from the Upper Arm, sew Wing to Central Wing Bone along the marked line.
Wing Armature
Without cutting, insert 3/16-inch dowel into each of the 3 wing bones on each wing, from top to bottom. Push until dowel is worked through the length of the tube. Cut the dowel off ยฝโ below the tip of the wing bone so it does not poke out the top. If desired, use scraps of MUST to close the tops of the tubes around the dowels.

Rnd 61: (RS) Working around the unworked sts on previous rnds, inc 18 times, sl st in 1st st to join. (36)
Bind off leaving very long tail for sewing.
Stuff firmly to Rnd 42.
Count 18 rounds down from the tip of the Upper Arm and mark Rnd 103 with a pin on the outside of the arm. Count up 9 rounds and mark in two places, 8 sts apart, evenly spaced on either side of the line created from the tip of the Upper Arm to the pin at Rnd 103.
Hold the open edge of the Central Wing Bone against the Upper Arm. The tip should touch the last rnd of the Upper Arm, bringing the arms to a point, the Central Wing Bone angled to run straight down, flush with the wall.
Mark on the Central Wing Bone where it touches the pins. Using the sewing tail from the wing bone, attach the open end to the Upper Arm. (Leave sewing tail from Upper Arm for future use.)
Before attachment is complete, finish stuffing firmly.

Wing Attachment
Using pins, mark a straight line down the outside edge of the corresponding Central Wing Bone, from tip to tip.

Stuff claw.
Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Hold to bottom of wing where all wing bones and Central Arm meet, claw facing outward, away from the head of the dragon. Before attachment is complete, stuff the remainder of the claw.
Using sewing tail, sew around as follows: 5 sts on the outside wing bone, 1 st on wing between bones, 4 sts on top/front of second wing bone, 1 st on wing between bones, 4 sts on top/front of third wing bone, 1 st on wing between bones, 9 sts around Rnd 2 of the Central Arm, 1 st on back of wing between bones, 3 sc on back of third wing bone, 1 st on back of wing between bones, 3 sc on back of second wing bone, 1 st on back of wing between bones.
Weave in all ends.
Hanging Your Dragon
The bulk of the dragon will hang from the plastic canvas ring on the back of the body. You can choose to either hang the canvas ring directly onto a wall hanger or nail or you can attach a pop tab like the other four on the back of the body.
If you wish to add a pop tab to the body instead of using the plastic canvas to hang, be sure to sew THROUGH the plastic canvas as well as the yarn when attaching the pop tab. Sew it as low as you are able on the plastic canvas ring, without sewing to the round piece of plastic canvas (since it is not sewn to the body itself).
Add pop tabs on the back side of the outside wing bone of each wing and about one inch down from the tip of each elbow. This will distribute the weight of the dragon as it is hanging.
Sew the pop tabs in place low enough that they do not stick up from the back of the dragon.
Using a scrap piece of MUST, sew the pop tabs with the round end up and the jagged end sewn down. Sew around the jagged end of the pop tab several times and through multiple stitches on the dragon. This will make sure all the weight doesnโt hang from one stitch and risk pulling out or tearing your work.
Important: Knot AND weave in ends on your pop tab attachments. Just weaving in the ends here will not help hold the pop tabs in place when they are under stress.
When all your tabs are in place, hold the dragon to the wall where you want it. Hold so the Central Wing Bones are vertical, not stretching out to the sides. Mark where the tabs touch the wall. Place your 3M hooks or nails on the wall and hang your dragon from the plastic canvas/tab on the main body and the pop tabs on the wings and elbows.
Tada! You did it! You now have a dragon crawling out of your wall! Donโt forget to feed him. Itโs a lot of work busting out of a wall. ๐

I think of my free crochet patterns a bit like a fun-size candy barโsame great ingredients, just a smaller experience. Theyโre complete patterns meant to be followed right from the blog, but they also give you a chance to see whether my pattern-writing style works for the way you crochet before investing in one of my premium designs.
If you prefer the king-size experience, the printable PDF versions include color photos, progress check boxes, and extra guidance for trickier sections. Available at shop.hookedbykati.com.
A: This pattern is written for advanced crocheters. It may not be the best pattern for a beginner. It a fun challenge for those who already enjoy amigurumi creation.

I havenโt made him but my daughter loves him but she wants him to be complete with the rest of his body.
It’s cool that the free pattern is available now, but I’m really glad I bought the pdf. Just having the check boxes to keep track of where I am is a huge plus and all the pictures make it a must have. I’m loving working on this and can’t wait to get him up on my wall.
I’m excited you are getting started on it. Yes, the PDF is significantly easier to follow and read. ๐
