Before You Start This Pattern

Is this crochet pattern beginner friendly?
This pattern is written for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. Basic amigurumi skills like working in the round, increasing, decreasing, and sewing pieces together will be helpful.

What yarn works best for amigurumi?
Worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn works best for most amigurumi patterns. Using a smaller hook than recommended will help create tight stitches with fewer gaps.

How do I keep my amigurumi from having holes?
Use a hook smaller than the yarn label suggests and keep your stitches tight. This helps prevent stuffing from showing through the fabric.

• For Wings: Red Heart Super Saver yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 364 yds/7 oz/198 g, Carrot (CAR), 1 ball; Black (BLK), < 1 ball; White (WHT), < 1 ball.
• For Caterpillar: Red Heart Super Saver yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 364 yds/7 oz/198 g, Black (BLK), < 1 ball; Bright Yellow (YEL), < 1 ball.
• G (4.00 mm) hook
• Polyfil stuffing
• Hairbrush for fluffing caterpillar
• Tapestry needle
• Optional: T pins or safety pins for temporary attachment to wreath

• Each Wing: 16” tall x 13” wide

Bind off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Position 3 dots staggered in the black section of each Upper Wing. Sew them in place using the long tails. Weave in ends.

Add veins. Using short backstitching, 4-5 stitches long.

Use the following image as a map for the veins. Mirror them on the opposite wing.

Align one top and one bottom wing so the edges with the starting chains are together and the dotted white edges are on the same side. Hold inside corners together.

Using a mattress stitch (see Special Stitches), sew the two wings together. There will be about 8 sts of the top wing still exposed when you reach the end of the short bottom wing. Repeat on other wing.

Bind off and weave in ends.

Remove standard wings. Use T-pins to attach wings to back of wreath along same attachment points as the original dragon wings from the Dragon Wreath design.

Caterpillar

With YEL, ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 4: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 5: Change to BLK, st st in FLO of next st, ch 4, hdc in second ch from hook, 2 sc down ch, sl st in same FLO on body, Change to YEL, 3 sc, change to BLK, st st in FLO of next st, ch 4, hdc in second ch from hook, 2 sc down ch, sl st in same FLO on body, 13 sc. (18)

Rnd 6: Change to YEL, sc in exposed back loop of Rnd 4, 3 sc in both loops, sc in exposed back loop of Rnd 4, 13 sc in both loops. (18)

Continue in both loops for remainder of piece.

Rnd 7: Sc evenly around.

Rnds 8-9: Change to BLK, sc evenly around.

Rnds 10-12: Change to YEL, sc evenly around.

Rnds 13-14: Change to BLK, sc evenly around.

Rnds 15-17: Change to YEL, sc evenly around.

Stuff.

Cut yarn. Thread needle through front loops of remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Using a hairbrush, avoiding the antennae, brush the whole caterpillar, brushing from head to butt so the fur all faces the same way. Brush until desired level of fluffiness is achieved.

Use T-pins to attach the caterpillar to the wreath, as if he is climbing up the side.
