This tutorial is all about the basic color change we use every day when crocheting in the round to make amigurumi. I like this tutorial for your basic color change in the round because it is done with illustrations, so it is crystal clear.

Color Changing In Crochet While Carrying Yarn

The Super Simple Jogless Color Change
by Hooked by Kati (that’s me!)
This is the first color change tutorial I ever did, and it shows a little. But it is still my favorite way to change colors in the round when I know I will be coming back around to the starting stitch in the same color. It is a super easy, beginner-friendly way to change colors and decrease the visibility of that dreaded “jog” in the work.

Clean Invisible Crochet Color Change for Amigurumi
This tutorial also addresses the “jog” that happens when you change colors working in the round. Working in continuous rounds means you will work upward in a spiral, but this also means that changing colors can cause a visible step up in the work.
This tutorial helps alleviate that jog with a neat method, the invisible slip stitch! Very useful, and very easy to learn.

Neat New Way To Do An Old Color Change
by Hooked by Kati (that’s me!)
I found this color change technique on Tiktok and was intrigued as to why it was different from a regular color change. The yarn itself and the structure of the stitch is the same as a standard color change, but the process takes a few more steps.
However, I was quickly informed that while there are more steps involved, it is a good way to do a color change for people who struggle with tension when changing colors in crochet.
So if you have tension issues when changing colors in the round, this might be for you!

Half Color Change For Perfect Horizonal Stripes
This is a cool technique for making horizontal stripes cleaner and sharper. It does not address the “jog” or step up in the color change, but rather addresses something we all deal with — the yarn from the previous round showing through after the color change.
This tutorial is done in yarn under single crochet, which adds another layer to making those lines clean and even.

How To Change Colors When You Crochet Circles
This is a great tutorial for how to change colors when working in double crochet (dc) in the round, like we often do for hat projects.
