Dragon Wing Tree Skirt | Free Crochet Pattern
Add a touch of magic to your holiday décor with this free Dragon Wing Christmas Tree Skirt crochet pattern! Perfect for fans of fantasy and handmade crafts, this unique design features classic dragon wing shaping and elegant draping, making it a stunning centerpiece for your Christmas tree.
Themed Christmas decorations are everywhere — mermaids, peacocks, owls, and yes, even dragons. I — of course — am partial to dragons. *Shocked face*
I got the idea for the Dragon Wing Tree Skirt when I was working on a set of wings for another project. The math is all about short rows and how they affect the angles created, and I had the thought, “what would this look like in 360 degrees?” I started doing the math to create the angles needed and make a hole in the middle for a tree trunk, and viola! Tree skirt!
I love the math involved with crochet design, and this project was created out of my love for dragons and my fascination with crochet math.
This tree skirt turned out really cool! It brings a magical, fantasy vibe to your holiday decorations. It is perfect for a geek-tastic home, a themed event, or a tree decorating contest. I know a dragon tree would be super awesome at our local Festival of Trees.
And the crochet project itself is wonderfully soothing. It’s a really nice TV-watching project, perfect for binging some holiday movies.
Construction
Basic The Dragon Wing Tree Skirt will fit any tree, but at 48″ in diameter, it is designed to look best under a 6-7.5 foot tree. It is created to wrap all the way around a tree, overlapping so there is no gap. However, if you have a corner tree, you can save some yarn and make it only 3/4 of the way around (10 segments instead of 13).
The entire skirt is done in single crochet (sc) and half double crochet (hdc), with some cool amigurumi elements thrown in. Four of the wing bones are extra wide and are stuffed lightly to give it some dimension. Each of the stuffed wing bones has a small claw on the end as well. While the single crochet is time consuming, it makes a great smooth fabric like the thin skin stretched across real dragon wings.
The part that makes the Premium Pattern 2.0 really special is checkboxes for every row. There are color coded checks to accommodate every wedge of the project, so it is incredibly easy to keep track of all the repeated segments.
You can get the Premium Pattern 2.0 on Ravelry or Etsy.

Tree skirt is constructed in one piece in repeating segments.
Repeat segments as follows:
Beginning Segment, A, A, B, A, A, B, A, A, B, A, A, B.
The final “B” segment will overlap the Beginning Segment when wrapped around the base of the tree so there is no gap where the tree skirt closes.

Is the 6 inch hole for the trunk its circumference or its diameter? If it’s the diameter, that’s fine. If it’s the circumference, how can I make the hole bigger? I ask because I look at the tree skirt and think of a dragon wing cape/wrap. I need the hole to be big enough to go around my neck. (It’s great to see a pattern with multiple uses!😀🐲)
