First Snow Cardigan | Free Crochet Pattern
Well, it came a little earlier than I expected this year, but we had the first snow here in Colorado. I had fully intended to drive the 30 minutes to pick up the yarn I needed to finish a project, but I was not planning on the first snow being 7.5 inches!
So, I stayed home, pajama pants, baked cookies, and watched the Cornetto series with my hubby.
A great snow day, though I wish I had been able to finish my shrug sooner! It would have been perfect for that nasty snowy day inside, with a book and a cup of coffee.
Alas, I finished it today instead. It is again a dreery, blustery, almost-winter day, so it feels equally appropriate.
I have had an obsession with cocoon cardigans for a while. I wanted to make one out of just the right yarn so I could have a “drive the kids to school in my pajamas” sweater. Something long enough to cover my bum, but easy to throw on and snuggle into on a quick drive across town every morning.
And I put in extra large sleeves because I wanted something with a little weight to it.
Red Heart Hygge (Hoo-gah) is amazing! And it’s really fun to say! Although, I sound a bit like a fog horn when I say it. “Hooooo– Gaaahhhh!”
It’s super soft, and just thick enough to be considered #5 bulky. I would say it is halfway between a typical worsted weight and Lion Brand Charisma in size.
It’s super soft. It is fuzzy, with little fibers sticking out, but they don’t come off. I have no fuzz on my after making this sweater, and I had on jeans for most of the construction process.
Have I mentioned it’s super soft?
Made anything with Red Heart Hygge yet? I’d love to see! Post pictures on the Facebook Page, in the Facebook Group, or on Instragram with the hashtag #hookedbykati.

My cardigan took me about 5 hours and 6 skeins of yarn. The ribbing is a little less “scrunchy” than typical fpdc, bpdc ribbing. It’s more for style than substance. Though this yarn and the pattern give it great stretch and lovely drape for a baggy sweater.
I added a few ch-1 spaces into the pattern to allow the sweater to breathe a little. As a result it’s heavy and cozy, but not sweaty or stifling. I also wanted to add something to the pattern to make it pop, some some BLO and FLO work added some texture.
Wash Instructions: Machine wash cold. Lay flat to dry.
The yarn is tumble dry, but I always lay my sweaters flat. It’s your choice.

Easy pattern. Need to have knowledge of double crochet (dc), chains (ch), front post double crochet (fpdc), back post double crochet (bpdc) and working Back Loops Only (BLO) or Front Loops Only (FLO).

I will need XXL and xxxl for gifts. Can I add 6 and 12 stitches to your pattern to achieve those sizes?
Thanks,
d
Gorgeous sweater. Thank you for the for the free pattern. I am reading through it now before I begin making it for my daughter. I don’t see instructions for the ribbing. Am I missing something. Thanks agan for creating something so lovely and sharing it with everyone xxx
I’m a lttle confused…Are you fpdc and bpdc over the same stitch each row or are you fpdc and bpdc
over the plain dc on each row?
This is a beautiful pattern! Do you happen to know how many yards are needed just for the rectangle portion? I might try to make it without the sleeves.
In row 2 do you do the fpdc and dc in same stitch?
No. Stitches written in [ ] are repeated, not worked together. So you will repeat the stitches inside brackets across, one stitch per stitch.
I made this using a different yarn. Although it was initially intended for myself, it fits my daughter beautifully. She loves being wrapped up/snuggled up in it. Thanks for the well written, easy to follow pattern!
This looks lovely! Since I live in Fl. I won’t be making this for me but will think about doing it for a friend who relocated up north.
