Free Gnome Owl Crochet Pattern | Beginner Christmas Amigurumi
This free crochet pattern includes instructions to make a small, beginner Gnome Owl, a fast Christmas decoration or stocking stuffer of a cute owl with a pointy, gnome hat.
These little owls have often been a part of my holiday decorations. It’s no secret that I like to deck the halls with crochet. However, I wanted to make something a little more whimsical and less “woodland creature.” Parts of my Christmas decorations now include brighter colors and cartoony critters, so I needed a new owl who would fit in.
This is a great beginner pattern! It will teach you basic amigurumi skills, and the hat uses a very cool color change method to make the little one-stitch ‘V’s stand out and look sharp.

How To Crochet Your Gnome Owl
- This is a beginner pattern, perfect for learning how to put together amigurumi.

Before You Start This Pattern
This pattern is written for beginner crocheters or experience crocheters looking for a fast project. Basic amigurumi skills like working in the round, increasing, decreasing, and sewing pieces together will be helpful.
Worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn works best for most amigurumi patterns. Using a smaller hook than recommended will help create tight stitches with fewer gaps.
Use a hook smaller than the yarn label suggests and keep your stitches tight. This helps prevent stuffing from showing through the fabric.

Pattern is written in English, in US terms, using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.
You Need to Know
Chains (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), increases (inc) and decreases (dec), mattress stitch sewing. Be eager to learn and ready to have fun!

Supplies
- Big Twist Value yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 380 yds/6 oz/170 g, Main Color for body (MC), <1 ball; Two Accent Colors for eye circles (AC1 and AC2), < 1 ball; Deep Red (RED), < 1 ball; White (WHT), <1 ball; Gold (GLD), <1 ball.
- G (4.00 mm) Furls hook
- Two 15mm colored round-pupil safety eyes
- Polyfil stuffing
- Tapestry needle
Measurements
4” wide x 4” deep x 8” tall
Gauge
8 sts x 8 rows in sc = 2” x 2”
Pattern Notes
- Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
- Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
- Ch-2 at beginning of row counts as dc.
Special Stitches
- Invisible finish: Cut yarn and pull through last st. Thread yarn through a needle. Skip next st and insert needle from front to back under both loops of the following st. Insert hook down through starting st where the yarn originally came out. Pull gently until the created loop is the same size as the existing stitches. Weave in end.
- Knit Style Color Change: Finish previous stitch normally, insert hook into next st, yo with new color, pull up a loop, yo with old color, pull through both loops on hook. This will create a stitch with the ‘V’ shape in the new color and the top of the stitch in the old color.

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 6-16: Sc evenly around. (30)
Rnd 17: [3 sc, dec] 6 times. (24)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Stuff, leaving some space at the top so it can be pinched closed.
Press remaining stitches flat and sew together in a straight seam.
Wings
(Make 2)
With MC, chain 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 6: [2 sc, dec] 3 times. (9)
Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Large Eye Circle
(Make 2)
With AC1, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times, sl st in 1st st to smooth the edge. (18)
Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Small Eye Circle
(Make 2)
With AC2, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
Bind off with Invisible Finish. Weave in ends.
Feet
(Make 2)
With GLD, ch 4.
Rnd 1: 5 dc in fourth ch from hook.
(This will create a half-circle.)
Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Beak
With GLD, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2-3: Sc evenly around. (6)
Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.
Assembly
Lay small eye circles on top of large eye circles. Insert safety eye through the center of the layered eye circles. Use the safety eye back to attach the eye and the two circles together. Back will be very tight to hold safety eye in place.
Sew the eyes to the body between Rnds 11 and 12 using the long tail on the large eye circle, eyes touching in the center.
Squish wings flat and sew onto the sides of the body in line with eyes. Be sure to sew them to the same round so they are even.
Sew beak centered between eye circles, touching both circles.
Sew feet two stitches apart at about Round 5 of the body, centered under the eye circles.
Weave in all attachment ends when parts are positioned as desired.
Gnome Hat
Use Knit Style Color Change (see Special Stitches) for all white sts on the hat.
With HAT, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in second ch from hook. (4)
Rnd 2: [Sc, inc] twice. (6)
