Groovy the Llama | Free Crochet Pattern
Groovy the Llama is a fluffy, more realistic take on a crochet llama pattern. This free amigurmi pattern captures the adorable face of this popular animal and is a fun project full of unique stitches and construction methods.
This is my take on a llama is inspired by the ultimate groovy llama. My FAVORITE animated movie of all time is The Emperor’s New Groove. The sarcasm is crisp, the fourth wall is regularly broken, and it is highly quotable.
Groovy may not be quite as gangly as Kuzco, but he has the expressive eyes, exaggerated features, and fluffy neck fur that reminds me of my favorite emperor.
Construction
As you know, I love loop stitches for texture. The Groovy the Llama pattern uses them for the neck and chest with space between each round of loops to give a more layered look to the fur.
His legs and feet also use some merging and branching techniques. The videos are very helpful for this pattern because the turning from the loop stitch rounds (wrong side facing out) and the leg branching (right side facing out) can be a bit tricky.
The Premium Pattern also contains a lot of great images to help with assembly.
This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!
Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Intermediate pattern. Need to have knowledge of chains (ch)s, single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), increases and decreases, and amigurumi part attachment. Knowledge of loop stitch useful, but an eagerness to learn is a great substitute.
All patterns are written in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

I would LOVE to see more of the Large Breed Dogs!
I’m OBSESSED!!
Thank you, kindly!
Thank you. Love this groovy llama.
You’re welcome! Post pictures on the Facebook group when you make one of your own. 🙂
Thank you!
Thank you for updating the link. I love the llama pattern. He is absolutely adorable! But now I have a question regarding the loops:. Since the loops end up on the back side, how do you get them on the outside of the llama?
Thank you again for updating the link.
If you go through the pattern, you’ll see that there is round done in the front loops only, turn the work sharply 90 degrees, and making the wrong side of the work the outside of the neck. You work with the wrong side to the outside for the remainder of the neck and then switch back to do the legs. I am working on a video for the whole pattern that should be done very soon. 🙂
The Groovy Llama video tutorial for the Neck and Front Legs is now available at https://www.hookedbykati.com/2018/06/25/groovy-llama-crochet-pattern-neck-and-front-legs-video-tutorial/.
The link for the llama’s neck doesn’t work. Can you please provide it again?
Thank you
The loop stitch tutorial links are now fixed! Thanks for catching it!
Your llama is absolutely AMAZING.
