A Brand-New crochet Color Change Technique: Or Is it?
You guys, there’s a color change conspiracy. They’re trying to convince us that there’s a newfangled crochet color change technique. And I’m here to tell you, it is the exact same color change. It just takes more steps.
Let’s look a closer look at the two methodsโthe traditional crochet color change and the supposed “new” one that’s been making its circles online lately.
You Will Learn:
- How to do the traditional color change and the new method.
- Why these two methods are essentially the same crochet color change.
Old school crochet Color Change (Step-by-Step)
- In the stitch before the color change, insert your hook and pull up a loop, without finishing the stitch.
- Pick up your new color and pull it through to finish the stitch, creating tshe top of the next stitch in your new color.
- Continue crocheting with your new color.
New crochet Color Change Technique
- Work your last stitch of the last color completely, all the way through.
- Insert your hook through the horizontal post and vertical post of the stitch you just completed.
- Grab your new yarn and pull it through, continuing on with your new yarn.
- (The fancy part) pull on the yarn of the previous color to tighten the loop.
Is there really a Difference?
Okay, so pulling out the previous yarn without your project unraveling is kind of a cool party trick. But essentially, this is the same color change as the old method with a bunch of extra steps. Here’s why:
When you finish a stitch, you pull the working yarn through the top loop of the next stitch and what becomes the left loop of the stitch. So, by sticking your hook through these two loops, all you’re doing is taking more time to pull it through where we’ve always pulled it through. It’s the same color change.
