Victor the Skeleton Dragon | Free Crochet Pattern
Bring a little spooky magic to your hook with this Skeleton Dragon crochet pattern! This free text-only amigurumi pattern is perfect for Halloween or any fantasy loverโs collection. Featuring detailed bone-like shaping, poseable wings, and eerie charm, this crochet dragon skeleton is a fun challenge for intermediate to advanced crocheters.
Whether youโre decorating for October or expanding your mythical creature lineup, this hauntingly beautiful dragon pattern will add a gothic twist to your amigurumi collection. Follow the step-by-step written instructions below to crochet your own skeletal dragon masterpiece.
I had a blast writing this pattern! Vincent is (and probably always will be) my favorite pattern. I’ve thought for years about fun ways I could use that familiar and popular pattern to create other designs of similar awesomeness. For about two years, I’ve had sketches set aside of what a skeleton Vincent would look like. When I started looking for a design idea for the Halloween Treasure Hunt 2025, I knew this was going to be the one.
Victor (a tribute to Victor Frankenstein) turned out better than I imagined, and his popularity has soared! He may even beat out Vincent as my best-selling pattern at this rate!
If you are as big of a Halloween geek as I am, you will need a skeleton dragon in your decorating at one time or another. This guy will fit the bill. The original is made in worsted weight yarn, but I bet he would translate well to blanket yarn if you use a larger hook and have some patience for making those skinny parts.
Can you imagine a Skeleton Dragon so big he can be a pillow? Or a great reading buddy on the couch in the Fall? EEP!

Putting Together Your Skeleton Dragon
Basic Shapes
Victor has a black base on which his skeleton can rest and to provide substance for his body. This keeps your skeleton dragon from sagging since — you know –he is lacking muscle tone.
The black base body is Vincent’s head, neck, and torso/tail. Then the skull wraps around the black head (so there are spooky black eye sockets showing underneath), and the rest of his bones are attached to the completed base to for the spooktacular dragon I call Victor.
Oddball Stitches
The only things I would consider “oddball” stitches are the bobbles that create the “vertebrae” on this neck, ribs, and tail. However, those afformentioned long pieces are crocheted around a chain, sort of making a really, really long oval. Basically, you will bobble-st and sc down the chain, then work one side of the “ribs” or “barbs,” rotate the work, and work the other side of the ribs into the bottom of the starting chain.
You can do this! And I’m here to help.
The Premium Pattern 2.0 has all the things you need to successfully put together your skeleton dragon! The lower legs can be tricky because they use both branching and merging to create them, so of course the Premium Pattern has photo walkthroughs of each of those parts.

Pattern Notes
- Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
- For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
- Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
- Rounds labeled โShort rndโ are worked back and forth and will end before the round is complete, leaving stitches deliberately unworked to be worked in later rounds as instructed. There is also a video tutorial.
- When instructed, an additional sc(s) will be added at the end of a round to move the starting stitch. These sts will not change the count of the round, they will only move the placement of the starting stitch.
- Changes that allow the tail to change direction are in Round 70 of the Tail/Torso piece. Choose your tail direction and follow directions for only ONE version of Rnd 70. The tail will be permanently positioned in the style you choose. When choosing RIGHT, the dragon will FACE right with his tail hanging over a ledge. When choosing LEFT, the dragon will FACE left with his tail hanging over a ledge. Flat tails can face either direction โ simply flip it over before attaching the neck.

Surface st (see Special Stitches) 2 lines from bottom of wing to peak of wing, evenly spaced apart. These can be jagged or crooked for effect.

I received this pattern after the scavenger hunt and he turned out so amazing! I made him with the tail that can go either way but now I have to make one of each! I’d gladly send you a picture of my finished work.
Hi I’m making this at the moment, and I’m wanting him to face the same way as the photo. Is that facing right or left? His left/right or mine?
Thanks,
Michele
This dragon is facing right. Right as you look at the shelf you wish to set him on. ๐
Patterns are beautifully written and Kati is amazing in offering scavenger hunts for premium patterns for holiday/themed patterns.
