Halloween crochet projects are not complete until you have a ghost plushie to hug. This Classic Ghost Buddy is the free crochet pattern to kick off your spooky season, or just to snuggle after Trick-or-Treating.

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I decorate my house extensively, but no matter what the theme is for the year , decorating is not complete until the old classic Halloween decorations come out.

This Classic Ghost Buddy is my homage to the adorable, cute-not-spooky Halloween decor of my childhood — Full of smiling Jack-O-Lanterns and adorable ghosts.

Construction

The Classic Ghost Buddy is worked from the bottom up all in one piece. There is no sewing on this guy, other than his eyes and mouth! Which makes this an easy crochet pattern!

He is shaped using short rounds, branching, and merging.

I have video tutorials for all of these techniques, but if you are at all concerned about the construction, I would highly recommend trick-or-treating yourself to the Premium Pattern 2.0. (See what I did there?) Premium Patterns come with lots of photos to help you understand the shaping and see how all the pieces come together. It also contains checkboxes to help you keep track of your rounds. That way you can put down your work, go to a Halloween party, and come back to your project without losing your place.

Pattern Notes

  • For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
  • Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
  • Rounds labeled “Short round” are worked back and forth and will end before the round is complete, leaving stitches deliberately unworked to be worked in later rounds as instructed. Short Rounds Video Tutorial.
  • When instructed, an additional sc(s) will be added at the end of a round to move the starting stitch of the next round. This does not change the stitch count of the round. It only moves the starting point.

Special Stitches

  • Sc join – Single crochet join: With long starting tail, make slip knot in yarn, loop slip knot over hook, insert hook through stitch, yo, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Leave long starting tail on outside of work.
