Want to make an amigurumi gift for the holidays, but you can’t find something winter themed that you actually like? Or maybe your loved one wants a plush dragon for Christmas, but you want to add something extra to make it a little more festive?

Making any amigurumi project into a perfect holiday gift is as simple as adding a festive hat or scarf to bring out the Christmas time in any crochet plushy.

I’ve created two simple patterns for you — a simple scarf and an adorable Santa hat with a permanent flop.

Each pattern is written so you can adjust the size of the hat or scarf to fit your amigurumi, no matter how big or small.

Adjustable Length Amigurumi Scarf

Pattern is written in English, in US terms, using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

You Need to Know

Chains (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), back loops only (BLO), knowledge of foundation single crochet (fsc) is useful. Be eager to learn and ready to have fun!

For a quick refresher of these basic skills, go to here.

You Will Practice Easy Techniques

  • How to crochet in rows, in the back loops only

Supplies

  • Red Heart Super Saver yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 364 yds/7 oz/198 g, any color , < 1 ball.
  • Furls G (4.00 mm) hook
  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends

Pattern Notes

  • Measure the height of the ami you want to wear the scarf. Multiply the height by two to get the length of the scarf. Foundation single crochet to reach that length.
  • For example, my plushy is 12 inches tall. 12 x 2 = 24. I will foundation single crochet for 24 inches to start my scarf.

Special Stitches

  • Fsc – Foundation single crochet: With loop on hook, ch 2, insert hook into 2nd ch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through one loop on the hook, yo, pull through both loops on the hook. [Insert hook in base of previous ch, yo, pull through one loop on the hook, yo, pull through both loops on the hook] repeated.
  • Fringe threading: Fold strand of yarn in half, insert hook into desired st in work, wrap loop of yarn over hook, pull through st, wrap both strands over hook, pull through loop on hook, pull tight.

Scarf Instructions

Row 1: Fsc (see Special Stitches) to reach 2x height of ami (see Pattern Notes), turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, in BLO, sc across, turn.

Rows 3-5: Repeat Row 2.

Bind off and weave in ends.

Cut twelve 5-inch strands of yarn. Fringe thread (see Special Stitches) 6 strands in each end of the scarf. Fray fringe.

Find the total number of stitches around on the amigurumi’s head at its forehead. Use this as the stitch count for the largest round of the hat. For example, Vincent’s head is 42 stitches around at his forehead, so I will increase until my hat is 42 stitches around.
