Toby the Newborn Dragon Crochet Plushie is a huggable amigurumi crochet pattern. If you can stand to part with him, he makes a great gift for little ones who love to rock baby dolls to sleep or push them in a stroller around the neighborhood.

Is little Toby tired? No need for a blanket! Toby can be wrapped up in his large, floppy wings.

Adorable baby dragon free crochet pattern from Hooked by Kati

Construction

This little dragon is as fun to make as he is to hug. Okay, almost as fun — nothing quite beats baby dragon hugs.

His body and tail are all one piece, starting at the tip of his tail and curving around so he lays on his back, tail between his legs.

His legs are done with branching and merging techniques. His wings are worked flat and then sewn to his back.

I’m particularly proud of the Premium Pattern for this design. It has some really great photo tutorials and will teach you a lot about branching and curving using short rounds. And it is really helpful when it comes to attaching this chubby baby legs.

Without the Premium upgrade, this pattern is an Advanced difficulty. However, with the photo tutorials, you will only need to know your basic stitches in order to have success with this pattern.

This Premium Pattern has been updated to include checkboxes for every round to help you keep track of your place in the pattern, even when you step away.

This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!

Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

  • Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
  • Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern. For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
  • Rounds labeled “Short round” are worked back and forth and will end before the round is complete, leaving stitches deliberately unworked to be worked in later rounds as instructed.
  • When instructed, an additional sc(s) will be added at the end of a round to move the starting stitch of the next round to the left (clockwise).
  • Ch-2 at beginning of row counts as a dc.

Row 31: Ch 1, dec, 9 sc, turn. (10)

Border: Do not break yarn. Ch 1, working in both loops, sc in the end if each row down side of belly scales, sc in the back of each starting ch, sc in the end of each row down the other side of belly scales, sc across last row, sl st in first st of border to join. (82)

Position the belly scales so the tail bends at your desired angle up over the belly. The position of the belly scales determines where the “front” of your baby dragon will be.

Hold belly scales to body with the first row touching Rnd 101 of the body (about 7 rows from the point of the neck). The belly scales should end at the bend in the tail. Pin belly in place.

Sewing through both loops of the border, working all the way around the edge, sew the belly scales to the body.

  1. okaaaay… stuffed before I even start! What th’ heck is:
    “With SEA, ch 2”
I understand most crochet terms, but have never seen this one…
    “SEA”?
I ADORE your dragons, but don’t think I have the patience… blankets, T-shirts, bags are my usual. BUT – I collect dragons so might have to persevere…

  2. Hi! I really like this pattern and am so excited to make it! But I do have one question. I was wondering if there was a way to make the tail curve up on the back instead of the tail going between the legs? Thank you very much for making your patterns free! I look forward to making some more of your patterns in the furture! 😃

    1. hi there love this pattern. I just have 1 question. when you miss the sc off of each row to make a point, when it’s finished it tells you to sc all around but where you end up is away from your row marker, do you sc down to the row marker or carry on from the place you have ended up?
hope that all makes sense thank you very much for the pattern and in advance for your help

      kind regards
      christy x

  7. Gorgeous little Dragon. Thank you for sharing your pattern. I have bookmarked the page and will be returning often when I am ready to have a go at this beautiful, complex pattern. I love your Dragon patterns. Being retired and on a very minimal income, I am unable to afford the paid patterns, so being able to have access to the instructions for free is brillaint for me.. Thank you again for sharing a free version with us.
