Dell is the cute, curly, baby sloth amigurumi pattern you have been looking for. He’s stuffed with polyfil and has soft loops for fur that are fun to snuggle and fun to crochet.

Dell chose today to make his appearance in order to celebrate the 80th birthday of Fairfield World, the wonderful company that makes my favorite stuffing, Polyfil. I only use Polyfil in all of my amigurumi projects because I can count on it to be clean, uniform, and washable, all things I really need in order to make the best stuffed animals.

You can get Polyfil and other awesome stuffing from FFW at any craft store or online.

Fairfield World anniversary Dell the Baby Sloth, free amigurumi pattern from Hooked by Kati

Happy birthday Fairfield World! Thank you for making Hooked by Kati the success it is today.

While the three-toed sloth is much more famous, I fell in love with the two-toed sloth at my favorite zoo, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. They don’t have the characteristic mask of their cousin. Instead, their expression is more peaceful and their nose more like a boop-able pig snout.

Contruction

Dell is slightly less intimidating than his mother as a project. Unlike Amelia, Dell does not have wired fingers or need to be brushed out, so his pattern works up faster and easier.

The nostrils are worked directly onto the snout as bobble stitches with a color change that makes them pronounced and well…boop-able. 🙂

The whole body is one piece, with the legs worked directly onto “leg holes” left after make the torso. If you have never done an amigurumi with all four legs worked onto the body like this, I would recommend getting the Premium Pattern for the bonus photos and guides.

You can purchase Dell’s pattern alone or you can purchase Amelia and Dell together in a Momma & Baby bundle.

This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!

Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Dell the Baby Sloth

Pattern is written in English, in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

Intermediate pattern.  Need to have knowledge of single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), slip stitch (sl st), right side (RS), wrong side (WS), increases and decreases, and amigurumi part attachment. Knowledge of loop stitch useful, but an eagerness to learn is a great substitute.

Supplies

Measurements

9” tall x 7” wide

Gauge

8 sts x 8 rows in sc = 2” x 2”

Pattern Notes

  • Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
  • For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
  • Do NOT use invisible decreases for this pattern. Because all the decreases are worked with the wrong side (WS) facing out, invisible decreases will show a ridge on the outside of the piece.
  • Extra 4 sts in Rnd 9 of Body are not counted. This moves the starting stitch 4 sts to the left and does not change the stitch count of the round.
  • Weave in attachment end at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.

Special Stitches

  • Sm bobble-st – Small Bobble stitch: [Yo, insert hook into st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 3 times in same st, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook.
  • Loop-st – loop stitch: Insert hook through st, loop yarn back to front over 1 finger, slide hook over nearside of loop, grab farside of loop and pull through st, yo, pull through both loops on hook, remove finger from loop.
  • Loop-st dec – Loop Stitch Decrease: Insert hook through st, yo, pull through st, insert hook through next st, loop yarn back to front over 1 finger, slide hook over nearside of loop, grab farside of loop and pull through st, yo, pull through both loops on hook, remove finger from loop.
  • Loop-st inc – Loop Stitch Increase: Work two loop sts in next st.
  • Sc join – Single crochet join: Slip knot in yarn, loop slip knot over hook, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.
