Hatching Dragon Egg | Free Crochet Pattern

It’s hard to tell what is in this amigurumi egg. Is could be a baby dragon or a baby dinosaur. But for sure, this hatching egg crochet pattern will make you an adorable new friend, even if he is a little shy.

This hatching dragon is not quite ready to face the world, but he his tail just won’t fit in his egg anymore, and a claw is all he can stretch out of his safe little egg.

Hatching Dragon Egg | Free Crochet Pattern

All patterns are written in English, in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

You Need to Know

Chains (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr), right side (RS), (wrong side) WS, increases and decreases. Be eager to learn and ready to have fun!

• Red Heart Super Saver, 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn, Spring Green (GRN) < 1 ball, Dark Orchid (PUR) < 1 ball, Off White (WHT) < 1 ball, Black (BLK) < 1 ball.
• G (4.00 mm) Furls Odyssey hook
• Two 24mm colored round-pupil safety eyes
• Polyfil stuffing
• Tapestry needle
• Straight pins
• Stitch markers

Measurements

5.5” tall x 5” wide x 5” deep

Pattern Notes

• Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise specified by pattern.
• For best results, assemble parts in order specified by pattern.
• Do not weave in ends of each part until the end. This allows for repositioning of parts if needed.

(Make 2)

With PUR, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Sc 4 in second ch from hook. (4)

Rnd 2: [sc, inc] twice. (6)

Rnd 3: Sc evenly around. (6)

Rnd 4: Change to GRN, [sc, inc] 3 times. (9)

Rnd 5-9: Sc evenly around.

Bind off and weave in ends. Do not stuff.

First Toe and Toe Attachment

Rnd 1: Sc 4 in second ch from hook. (4)

Rnd 2: [sc, inc] twice. (6)

Rnd 3: Sc evenly around. (6)

Rnd 4: Change to GRN, [sc, inc] 3 times. (9)

Rnd 5-9: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 10: 4 sc on 1^st loose toe, 9 sc on second loose toe, 5 sc on other side of 1^st loose toe, 9 sc on starting toe. (27)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing. Stuff toes.

With PUR, thread needle and sew two lines on each toe; the first line 1 stitch long, 2 rounds from the color change, the second 2 stitches long, 4 rounds from the color change. Repeat on each toe. Set aside.

Inside of Egg

With BLK, ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 4: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 5: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 6: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 7: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 8: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 10: Sc evenly around.

Tail Ridges

With PUR, ch 32.

Row 1: 3 sc in second ch from hook, skip 1, sc, skip 1, 3 sc in next ch, [skip 1, sc, skip 1, 4 hdc in next ch] 3 times, skip 1, [sc, skip 2, 5 dc in next ch, skip 2] twice, sc in last ch.

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew in a straight line along tail, with shortest ridges at narrowest end of tail.

Sew tail to Inside of Egg in a 4 st x 4 st square between Rounds 22-25, directly on the opposite side from the safety eyes.

Egg Shell

With WHT, ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 5: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 6: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 7: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 8: [4 sc, inc] 6 times. (36)

Rnd 9: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 10: [5 sc, inc] 6 times. (42)

Rnd 11: Sc, hdc, dc, (tr, picot, tr) in next st (see Pattern Notes), dc, hdc, 36 sc. Turn. (43)

You will now work back and forth around the shell. Rounds will have different stitch counts as the hole is created. For Rounds 11 – 21, even numbered rounds are worked counter-clockwise; odd numbered rounds are worked clockwise.)

Rnd 22: Partial round, working clockwise starting on 1^st st of last round, 20 sc, picot. Turn. (20)

Rnd 23: 20 sc, 11 sc in ch-11 sp, 20 sc (leave last 3 sts unworked). Turn. (51)

Insert Inside of Egg into shell. Pull Tail through the tail hole first, then stretch Shell over the Inside of Egg so eyes are showing through the giant hole in the front of the shell. Work decreases around Inside of Egg to close Shell.  

Rnd 26: [dec, 7 sc] 5 times, dec, 3 sc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc. (48)

Rnd 27: [dec, 6 sc] 6 times. (42)

Rnd 28: [dec, 5 sc] 6 times. (36)

Rnd 29: [dec, 4 sc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 30: [dec, 3 sc] 6 times. (24)

Bind off, leaving long tail for sewing. Thread yarn through front loops of remaining 6 sts and pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Finishing

Press claws flat. Working through both layers of last round of Claws, sew to Inside of Egg, curling over the bottom edge of the Shell. Weave in ends.

With PUR, thread needle. Sew jagged lines to create the cracks in the Shell. Make sure to work over the edge of the Shell to make each crack go all the way to the edge.

Pull Tail around outside of Shell to the left. With a scrap of GRN, tack down the end of the tail to the body at Round 25. Tail will help egg sit upright. This can be done by threading the yarn through the Tail and the Shell twice, pulling tight, and binding off. Weave in ends.
