Textured Dragon Egg | Free Crochet Pattern
The latest amigurumi pattern isn’t really an amigurumi at all. But it is a great addition to your amigurumi dragon collection.
I always wanted to create a dragon egg to go with my other yarn dragons. One day, I found a bunch of huge plastic eggson clearance after Easter. (Even now, in November, there were some at my local Joann’s, and I know you can get them online year round.) I had planned to just paint them or something for Halloween decorations, but decided that they needed more texture, and crochet was just the way to create it.
The Textured Dragon Egg was originally offered last year as a prize for a small scavenger hunt, but now it is offered here on the blog, for free, and as a Premium Pattern, which has two additional options for sizes.
Construction
This Textured Dragon Egg can be crocheted around a large plastic, styrofoam, or paper mache egg or stuffed with Polyfil to make a plushy-style egg.
The texture takes these crochet eggs from ordinary to extraordinary, but it is easy to learn and works up fast.
It is a simple spike-st pattern, and I’ve worked out the increases and decreases for you as well so you never have to break the pattern as the egg grows.
And as an extra bonus for the Premium Pattern, you get two additional sizes, one larger and one smaller, so you can make a wide variety of eggs for your collection!
This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!
Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Pattern Notes
- Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
- Check the fit of the piece over the egg, starting at the pointy end, about every 5 rounds.
- When working increases, there will be rows that do not follow the pattern of “spike-st in sc, sc in spike-st.” This is normal and should only last for a single round after an increase round to even out the alternating stitches again.
Special Stitches
- Spike-st – Spike stitch single crochet: Insert hook into st one row below working st, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.
Video Pattern
This pattern also has an accompanying video! It walks through the entire free pattern, with row labels throughout.
This pattern video uses Red Heart Super Saver Ombre yarn and a Furls Odyssey hook.
