Anduin the Gryphon | Free Crochet Pattern
Meet Anduin, the latest free amigurumi crochet pattern from Hooked by Kati. He is the epitome of regal mythical creatures — both the king of the skies and the king of the forest. As a crochet artist, he will represent the balance of beauty and joy. This project will make you feel like a master amigurumi artist while also providing a fun creation experience.
A gryphon is half eagle (cunning, graceful, and intelligent) and half lion (powerful, courageous, and regal).
The gryphon (or griffin) often represents the balance of strength and beauty, brain and brawn.
I chose the name Anduin after the King of Stormwind from World of Warcraft. He carries the royal name brilliantly, don’t you think? 🙂
Construction
Do not let the look of this pattern intimidate you. Feathers tend to look more complicated than they really are. 🙂
In this case, the feathers and the texture are worked directly onto the body as you go, so they don’t add any extra sewing.
The body is all one piece from the top of the head to the front legs and torso.
The more comfortable you are with branching and merging amigurumi parts, the better you experience will be.
That being said, your best possible experience will be with the Premium Pattern. I have put a lot of working into it — adding over 70 photos of every step so you not only create your dream gryphon, but you have a blast making him.
This pattern has also been updated to the new 2.0 format! Meaning it now has more color-coding and checkboxes for every round/row!
After all, crochet is supposed to be FUN AND RELAXING, not stressful of confusing.
This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!
Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Pattern Notes
- Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
- For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
- Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
- When instructed, an additional sc will be added at the end of a round to move the starting stitch of the next round to the left.
- One st will be added to Rnd 7 of head to make the total sts an odd number. This will allow for the texture pattern to remain in continuous rnds. These textured rnds are hard to see; marking the 1st st of the rnd is recommended.
- Wait to stuff the legs until the first two rounds of the body are done; this makes the first round of the body easier to see.

Mark a straight line on the body from Rnd 32 to 26, at a slight upward angle. Then bottom of the line should be directly above the back side of the front leg. Repeat on the other side of the body so the wings will be evenly placed.
Hold wings to body, Feather one on top, the point of the wing facing upward, and Rnd 10 of the Wing Cap touching the pin at Rnd 32. Mark on the wing where it touches both marked sts on the body.
With long strand of STO or sewing tail from the Wing Cap, sew wing to body through two stitches along the marked line.

Finally finished! This was a monster of a project for this beginner but the end result is totally worth it.
Just a quick question as far as construction of the torso goes, is it meant to be crocheted inside out (in a counterclockwise direction)?
No. It should still be worked clockwise, RS facing out.
YES!! For the Alliance!! This gryphon is PERFECT for King Anduin! I now have to buy yarn even MORE, as I’d just submitted an online order, LOL) Cant wait to start on him, and TY for this lovely regal bird pattern!
My feathers are all curled up. How can I get them to lie flat?
Kati, thank you for sharing your great crochet projects, my daughter is 3rd grade teacher and I make stuff for her classroom these children are enjoying Vincent, Ember, Wonder and now Anduin. I love the challenge of making these awesome characters. Thanks again

I was wondering on which row do you place the eyes?
I just discovered your patterns and love them. Especially love Anduin the Griffin because I play World of Warcraft and he is my favourite character.

Hi Kati!
I am loving this pattern and it’s working up so well! I just have one question…
It appears that there is only one set of ‘wing cap’ pattern instructions in your free pattern when it looks as if two ‘wing caps’ (a medium size and a small size) on the wing base in your photos. Am I missing something?
The wing caps are all one piece, they just look like they have two layers. 🙂 Just follow the directions as written and you will see the layers appear. 🙂
Awesome looking creature. Can’t wait to try your pattern.
